Current Skincare Favourites

Helllooo friends!

This week’s post is all about my current skincare favourites. I know last week I published a similar post where I told you about the makeup products I’ve been loving recently, but I figured it made sense to have both posts go up back to back, considering they were related but not quite in the same category. A little preface to this post before we dive in: skin care is something to be approached with caution and my advice is to be taken with a grain of salt. What works for my skin won’t necessarily work for yours. Products are designed for different skin types, concerns and ages so that is something that needs to be factored in when finding a regimen that suits you. A little bit about my skin…I’m 29 years old, I have dry-combo skin, not overly sensitive and my concerns are fine lines, texture, pores and blackheads. I like products that contain anti-aging benefits and also a daytime product that has SPF in it, although I usually rely on a CC cream for this or just a straight-up sunscreen.

The first product that I’ve been loving has been the NeoStrata Glycolic Renewal serum. This is a serum that I use after right after cleansing, only at night. It contains 10% glycolic acid which is one of the most common AHAs (alpha hydroxy acid). AHAs are great for anti-aging because they chemically exfoliate your skin by loosening dead skin cells and allowing newer, fresher skin to resurface. Exfoliating your skin is great because it lessens the appearance of wrinkles, it opens up your pores and allows the proceeding products that you apply to penetrate much deeper, creating even better results. If you’re new to using a product containing AHAs, you want to gradually allow your skin to build tolerance to it, as at first it can be quite harsh. I always recommend reading the ingredients list and consulting a sales rep in whatever store it is you might be in. Stores like Sephora and Shoppers Drug Mart usually have someone who is trained in skincare and is familiar with the products they carry. However if you’re looking at one brand specifically at a counter or their own store, then that sales rep will have more information because they’re trained solely on their own brand.

Products similar to this that I’ve used in the past: OLEHENRIKSEN Invigorating Night Transformation™ Gel

The next two products I want to talk about are a morning and evening moisturizer. The daytime moisturizer that I’ve been using is the OLEHENRIKSEN Sheer Transformation Perfecting Moisturizer. It contains vitamin C which helps brighten the skin; licorice root which calms skin and reduces redness; and pea extract which contains lots of anti-aging benefits, replenishes skin’s elasticity and helps protect your skin against free radicals (bad shit in the environment). Sheer Transformation feels light on the skin but also makes your skin feel dewey and soft.

The moisturizer I’ve been using at night is the Clinique Moisture Surge Overnight Mask. Clinique carries a daytime Moisture Surge which is lighter and buildable whereas this version is meant to be used as an overnight mask to really replenish your skin’s moisture. I’ve been loving it this winter since my skin was really starting to feel tight and dry but I’ve noticed that less since I’ve been using it.

This next product is a newer product and it’s from a natural skincare brand called Andalou. I’ve been using their Luminous eye serum for about 2 months now and have really been enjoying it. It’s definitely not a break-the-bank product as it ranges anywhere from $15CAD-$25CAD depending on where you get it (I got mine on sale at Whole Foods). There were a few things that drew me into this product. One— I was broke. I’m not going to sit here and pretend that I have no problems in life and that I have all this money to splurge on luxury skincare. I don’t. So, often when I’m out of one product and don’t have the cash to fork out on another $60-$80 on eye cream, I’ll end up seeing what I can get that’s on the cheaper end but still does a good job. This usually means a bit more research, but I had heard good things about this brand before and so I just decided to give it a go. I also enjoy putting my money towards smaller and natural brands when I have the chance because it’s the little steps towards being environmentally friendly that make a difference. As you may have noticed, a common theme in a lot of what I like is natural, good-for-the-planet-and-our-bodies kind of stuff. So, has this product made a world of difference in my life? No. But, I would repurchase it because I think it’s helped keep my eyes moisturized and bright, and that’s what I wannnnttt.

The last two products I want to mention are a face mask and a lip mask. The face mask is the Truth Sugar Glow Polishing Mask from OLEHENRIKSEN (can you tell I love this brand?). If it was for the smell alone, I would repurchase this. I did happen to find this at Winner’s because OLEHENRIKSEN recently redid their packaging (I guess Winners bought the old stock?) so it was much less than what it currently retails for ($52CAD). I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again, their whole Truth line is fantastic. Actually, almost everything I’ve tried from them is great. The Truth line smells SOOO GOOOOD though! If you want a face mask that tingles (in a good way), smells like a creamsicle, and leaves your skin glowy and fresh, then this is for you.

The lip mask, which I use every night before I go to bed is the BITE Agave Lip Mask. I have the maple version which I’ve had since I worked at Sephora back in the day but I am still working my way through it. I stopped using it at one point for a while but now I honestly can’t remember why. My lips normally get so dry in the winter but I haven’t had dry lips except for one week so far and that’s because I forgot to keep using this stuff. It’s amazing. BITE is another all natural brand that creates lip products you could essentially eat. They are cruelty-free AND Canadian! I highly recommend this lip mask as you will wake up with the most luscious, soft and supple lips ever in the morning and then be like, “Hey, Cass was right, this DOES work.” You’re welcome.

That’s it guys! I hope you liked the post today and make sure you leave your email to subscribe so you can be notified of future blog posts!
