Glowing, dewey, highlighted skin is all the rage right now, and with Summer upon us, a fresh and healthy complexion is such a beautiful look. Here are some tips to help you out if you’re wanting to hop on the glowing skin skin bandwagon!
As if this isn’t the most obvious tip out there, it’s one that often gets forgotten. Just a few weeks ago my skin was dryer than the Sahara and I had not been drinking as much water as I should have. As soon as I made a conscious effort to down a few more glasses a day, my skin showed a big improvement! Water not only hydrates, but it will help flush out any toxins or impurities in the skin. Add some lemon and ginger to your water to also help with digestion!
Oils have become a new favourite part of my skin care routine and it’s not something to be scared of if you haven’t tried them. I bought argan oil and rosehip oil from Winner’s where there beauty section always has great discounted items. Both oils were $10 each which is great compared to some other high end brands I’ve seen. At night and in the morning (depending on how dry my skin feels) I’ll do a few drops of both either before my moisturizer or I’ll mix the argan oil in with my foundation if I want a dewy look and less coverage. There’s no wrong way to use oils really, it’s all about how your skin feels. Most people I find who have “oily” skin, actually have dry skin but because their skin is so dry, it’s overcompensating by producing more oil. So, if you are oily, try using an oil! It seems counterproductive but it could actually help balance your skin out.
One of my favourite makeup products these days is highlighter. I love to mix my Sephora liquid highlight drops in with my foundation for an all over glow or just add them to the tops of my cheek bones and layer a powder highlight over top. The Sephora brand ones are awesome and pretty affordable! If you want to splurge a bit though, the Becca liquid highlights in Opal or Champagne Pop are gorgeous!
One of the best ways to show off your radiant skin is to draw attention to it. By going subtle on your eyes and lips, you can really showcase the care you’ve been taking to your skin. I like to have a soft, natural brow, some mascara and a bit of bronzer on my “skin focus” days.
Go Foundation-less and Protect YoSelf!
Let your skin breathe for a day! If you really need the coverage, just spot conceal where necessary but leave your skin bare if you can. Always rock a good SPF but especially if you’re out in the sun without any makeup. Protect your skin’s largest organ. SPF year round is always the best.
Another overlooked tip to keeping a clear complexion is to make sure you are cleaning your brushes. Sounds simple, but if you aren’t washing them often enough they will only spread bacteria and clog your pores. No bueño. If you’re using your makeup brushes every day, I would use a daily brush cleaner in between uses and then shampoo them once a week. My favourite soap to shampoo my brushes with is Dr. Bronner’s soap. It’s organic and inexpensive and you can find it at almost any grocery store. Another tip to sanitizing your brushes is 99% alcohol. This can really dry your brushes out so I try not to use it often, but 99% alcohol not only cleans your brushes but disinfects them. You can get this at the drug store and pour some into a spray bottle.
